Phosphorescent
Cast Plastic Sculpture
The technology
of making interactive art took years of learning how to use and
build electronic sensors and processors. It was a slow and tedious
process. Sometimes it was hard to remember, when building a computer
from scratch (home computers were not available at that time)
what the concept of the art really was. I decided that I needed,
instead, a solid-state chemical reaction that would immediately
involve the viewer with the art.
A chance encounter
with a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee, sent me in the direction of
researching and creating phosphorescent, glow in the dark art
made of cast polyester resins. Eventually I developed an entire
rainbow of glowing colors.
The phosphorescent
sculptures were beautiful commentaries based on the themes of
cultural history, and the environment.
Glow in the
dark arrowheads were anonymously inserted into the Florida landscape.
A glowing pyramid indicated the time of day, and the position
of the sun during the day. It also glowed at night capturing
the path of the sun. A segmented landscape's horizontal layers
showed the progress of the color research and art.
