Phosphorescent Cast Plastic Sculpture

The technology of making interactive art took years of learning how to use and build electronic sensors and processors. It was a slow and tedious process. Sometimes it was hard to remember, when building a computer from scratch (home computers were not available at that time) what the concept of the art really was. I decided that I needed, instead, a solid-state chemical reaction that would immediately involve the viewer with the art.

A chance encounter with a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee, sent me in the direction of researching and creating phosphorescent, glow in the dark art made of cast polyester resins. Eventually I developed an entire rainbow of glowing colors.

The phosphorescent sculptures were beautiful commentaries based on the themes of cultural history, and the environment.

Glow in the dark arrowheads were anonymously inserted into the Florida landscape. A glowing pyramid indicated the time of day, and the position of the sun during the day. It also glowed at night capturing the path of the sun. A segmented landscape's horizontal layers showed the progress of the color research and art.

  Glowing Phosphors -
Several glowing colors are displayed here. They were selected from the hundreds that are part of a rainbow of phosphorescent phosphors developed by Ira Winarsky for his art.
Daylight and Night Solar Pyramid -
The solar Pyramid is a sundial which functions by concentrating the light into a star form, which moves with the sun. At night, its phosphorescent base shows the path of the sun, taken during the day.
  Glowing Tiffany Pyramid -

Daylight and Night Phosphorescent Landscape -
Left over phosphorescent materials from other sculpture pieces were put into a bread mold. When full, the mold was sliced vertically like a loaf of bread, exposing the layers, which show the evolution of the other phosphorescent art pieces.
Daylight and Night Sand Dollars -
Sand Dollars were anonymously placed in places on Florida Beaches where people look for seashells. Although they look real during the day, they glow bright blue at night
