Cast Metal Sculpture

One of my earliest major bodies of artwork were sculptures made of cast metals. It's an ancient process, and it's one that used to require the modeling of a sculpture in bees wax. Then an investment mold was made around the wax original. The mold was heated in a kiln and the wax melted out and left an empty mold to receive the cast metal.

I used a newer quicker process. An original was made of Styrofoam. It was either constructed with glued together Styrofoam pieces, or a Styrofoam block that was cut with hot knives. The finished foam original was carefully embedded in an oily foundry sand. Hot molten metal was poured into the foam original and it took the form of the foam before the sand could move. Love, paradox, and the environment inspired the sculptures.
