Interactive Sculpture

The cast metal sculptures seemed so rigid, so fixed in space. Some of them wanted to move around. I wanted to do something new, a sculpture that would interact with the viewer. The answer was an involvement with interactive sculpture.

Each interactive piece responded to the viewer in one way or another. Each sculpture was also a commentary on some cultural theme, like love, war, and the environment. Some of the pieces were very sensual; they changed or moved when they were touched, talked to, or just approached. The war related pieces commented on the Viet Nam war. The environmental pieces utilized wildlife to create a setting that startled the viewer, while also commenting on the war.

  Furry Box -
When a viewer touches the metal spheres inside the top of the furry box, the plastic tubes light up and go in and out of the box.
  I Love You Meter -
When a person puts money in the art piece, it flashes, "I Love You For Ten Minutes" for ten minutes.
  Patriotic Flag -
This sculpture waives the American Flag whenever you talk or sing to it.

  Birdfeeder -
This huge birdfeeder is made from a radar antenna. It's a variation on the Biblical instruction to beat your swords into plowshares. The feeder attracted hundreds of birds, which would fly away when someone approached them. The birdfeed seeds grew and became a recurring garden for the birds in future seasons.
  Collection Plate -
When someone puts money in the coin meter in the Collection Plate, the sculptures Angel wings flap up and down and the neon halo above lights up above them for ten minutes.
  Dance Floor -
When someone stands on the Dance Floor, the cube hanging from the ceiling, plays an old 78 record song, "Give Me A Little Kiss Will Ya Huh", while the lights blink on and off in time with the music.
